Aging problems accompanying the sagging and relaxation that comes with passing time often involve the skin itself and are usually caused by sun damage. Wrinkles and uneven pigmentation can be seen anywhere but are most common around the eyes, mouth/lip and cheek areas. UV exposure causes breakdown of the collagen and elastin in the dermis, which leads to weakening and wrinkling of areas that are moved by muscles of facial expression. Both of these problems can be dramatically improved by resurfacing.
In past years, carbon dioxide lasers were used to remove the top layers of the skin and after a long recovery period the healing response would leave the skin smoother and clearer. The “real” benefit was usually in the 40 to 50% range after post-operative swelling subsided. Today we can combine a medium-depth chemical peel with a light dermabrasion (in a procedure called “chemabrasion”) to give a 70 to 80% improvement. Happily the healing time is usually shorter and the skin pinkness (normal as a part of the wound healing) often lasts half as long. Additionally, Botox can be used to weaken muscles of expression while the skin is healing and this improves the ultimate smoothness of the skin in areas like frown lines, crow’s feet or “smoker’s lines”.
