FAQs About Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Barbara

During cosmetic surgery consultations at our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center, our patients ask many questions – and not just about the procedure! To help you make a more informed choice about cosmetic surgery, here are some of our most popular questions that are asked, and our answers.

Q: I am not sure if I am ready for surgery, but I am interested. Should I come in now for a consultation?
A: We recommend coming in for a consultation when you have specific concerns. We will evaluate your concerns and together come up with a plan.

Q: How long do I have to wait from consultation to the day of surgery?
A: Generally your surgery can be scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks after your consultation.

Q: Where are the surgeries performed?
A: We perform all of our surgeries in our outpatient facility that is located near Cottage Hospital.

Q: Do you take medical insurance? Will you bill my insurance company?
A: No. We do not take medical insurance and we will not bill your insurance company.

Q: How much will my cosmetic surgery cost?
A: Cost depends on the procedure(s) performed. A written quotation will be given to you at the time of your consultation.

Q: Do you have payment plans?
A: Yes, you can set up a payment plan through Care Credit. Read more about Care Credit here.

Q: Is my medical information confidential?
A: Your medical information is always kept private. It can be discussed with your family member only if you say OK.

Q: Do I have to go under general anesthesia?
A: No. All of our facial surgeries and body liposuction can be performed safely and comfortably using local anesthesia and conscious sedation.

Q: How much pain can I expect after surgery?
A: Most facial procedures (including full face lifts) and body contouring surgeries have remarkably little pain – and can be easily controlled with oral medication.

Q: I have some medical issues – can I still have surgery?
A: It will depend on what your medical issues are. As cosmetic surgeries are usually elective, there is never a reason to put any patient at risk. If necessary, “medical clearance” will be requested from your family MD.

Q: I’m from out of town. Where do you recommend that I stay?
A: We have a webpage for visitors to Santa Barbara including hotel recommendations, dining options, and attractions that you may be interested in during your visit.

Q: I live locally, can I drive myself home?
A: No. Please make arrangements for a friend or relative to take you home after the surgery.

New Year, New You! Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Options

Can you believe another year has flown by? Each year we get the chance to meet and work with new patients, as well as those who have returned, and we enjoy helping every one of you to look and feel your best.

If plastic surgery in Santa Barbara is on your “to do” list for the New Year, there is no better time than now to start planning. Winter is when most people tend to stay indoors, travel less, and sleep more – all of which are ideal conditions to recuperate from a cosmetic surgery procedure. In our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center practice, we specialize in facial cosmetic surgery, minimally-invasive (MI) cosmetic surgery, skin rejuvenation, and liposuction body contouring.

There are many options for facial cosmetic surgery, including:

  • Facelift: to address skin laxity in the cheek and neck
  • Forehead Lift: to reposition the forehead and brow upward
  • Eye Lift: to correct sagging skin or fat bulges in the eye area
  • Rhinoplasty (Nasal Surgery): to help either appearance or breathing function of the nose
  • Neck Lift: to address sagging skin and local fat accumulation in the neck area
  • Lip Enhancement: to add volume to lips (either with an implant, grafting your own fat, or with injectable fillers)
  • Chin Lift: to enhance a “weak” chin or modify one that is too prominent
  • Ear Tuck / Ear Pinning: to address ears that are too prominent or stick out from the side of the head
  • Chemabrasion Skin Resurfacing: to improve skin that has wrinkles, fine lines, scars, acne scars, and/or sagging

We also have minimally-invasive (MI) surgical options for patients with early changes or those who want to “maintain” the benefit of previous surgery. These give noticeable improvement with less cost and “downtime”. Learn more about MI surgery and options available here.

We also offer treatment options to tighten and contour your problem areas through liposuction for the abdomen, arms, legs, and hips/flanks. Learn more about liposuction here.

We practice cosmetic surgery in Santa Barbara that gives a natural, rejuvenated result.

Arm Liposuction in Santa Barbara

Saggy upper arms can be caused by decreased collagen and elastin levels (which happens naturally as we age) or from weight gain. When the upper arms are flabby, they may have a “batwing” or “kimono” appearance that may make someone self conscious. Unfortunately, the localized fat and loose skin of the upper arm can be one of the most stubborn areas to shed or tone, even with proper diet and exercise. When this is the case, arm liposuction can make a big difference in the appearance of the arm.

Arm liposuction can be done with or without skin excision. When fat is the main issue, it can usually be treated with liposuction alone and the skin will contract without the need for skin removal. When there is too much excess skin, commonly this happens after weight loss, skin removal can be done along with the liposuction. The skin removal scar is placed on the inside of the arm (against the body), above the elbow, and is not visible from the front or back. If only a small amount of skin is removed, the skin removal can often be confined to or near the armpit.

Neck Lift Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Barbara

Neck Lift cosmetic surgery in Santa Barbara is most commonly known for getting rid of the double chin or the “wobble” in the neck area but you would be surprised at how much it can truly change an appearance. Before we discuss the results, let’s look at why Neck Lift surgery may be needed in the first place.

Aging Neck
Neck skin is delicate – more so than facial skin – and is exposed to the same elements as the face but often times it is neglected. I always like to remind people that their skin care routine should not stop at the jawline. I recommend cleansing, moisturizing, and (most importantly) using sun screen on the neck area. Due to the delicate skin (and possibly lack of sunscreen in that area), the neck may age prematurely causing the skin to become loose and crepe-y. The “double chin” may be due to a number of causes including genetics, weight gain, weight loss after weight gain, loss of muscle tone, and, of course, aging.

Neck Lift Surgery
The patients I see at Cosmetic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara are interested in Neck Lift surgery because they feel that their neck looks “old”. We can restore their neckline to what it once was by tying muscles to create a “sling effect” for better support and adding a suspension suture to give more long-lasting support to the neck. Incisions are hidden behind the ears and a small one under the chin.

Results of Neck Lift Surgery
Neck Lift surgery can get rid of the double chin and re-contour the face. With the “heaviness” gone from the neck and jawline, many of my patients report that their updated appearance not only makes them look younger but also makes them look like they have lost weight!

A Facelift in Santa Barbara Can Turn Back The Clock

Facelift surgery in Santa Barbara is a great way to take years off your look. Many people who come to see me for a Facelift surgery consultation often express that their “older” appearance is hiding the fact that they still feel young at heart (or sometimes, they are still youthful but their image tells a different story).

While many people may debate over why or when a person ages, there is much less debate about the characteristics of an aging or “mature” face. Some people may have all the characteristics and others may have just a few:
  • Facial and neck skin are loose due to loss of elasticity and muscle tone
  • Wrinkles in the face and neck are deep
  • The lower part of the cheek – the jowls – become heavy and may look like they are “hanging”
  • Chin is less defined and/or the neck area is saggy
  • The overall appearance looks tired
Facelift surgery can address all of the characteristics above to help restore a youthful appearance. When I perform a facelift in Santa Barbara, I address the neck and cheek areas. My goal is to return fullness to the cheeks (mid-facial implants may be necessary to achieve the correct balance), lift the jowls, and smooth the neck. Deep tissue work will provide contouring, support, tightening and will also add longevity to the result.

Facelift surgery is done using a combination of local anesthesia, oral and intravenous sedation to provide relaxation and lack of awareness through the procedure. General anesthesia is not used. Most people return to work 8 to 10 days after the surgery (depending upon job requirements).

At Cosmetic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara, we specialize in facelift surgery and facial rejuvenation that yields a natural, rested, non-operated look. To schedule an appointment, please call my office at 805-563-0000.

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgeon on Plastic Surgery Trends

As a Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon I am often asked, “At what age should I get a facelift or a nose job or a necklift?” The answer is that it is different for everyone. Lots of factors play into the decision to get plastic surgery so I treat each patient on a case-by-case basis. However, there are plastic surgery trends that I have observed amongst different age groups and what they tend to gravitate towards. The procedures could either be surgical or non-invasive aesthetic treatments that can be done at a medical spa like Evolutions Medical & Day Spa in Santa Barbara.

20s to early 30s: Popular Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Aesthetic Treatments

Nose Rhinoplasty by Dr. Terry J. Perkins

Mainly the cosmetic surgery and medical aesthetic treatments that are sought out by young women in their 20s to early 30s are those that address proportions. Young women are interested in having their nose fit nicely within their facial features or having a “womanly” figure. So it is probably no surprise that many of these women seek out rhinoplasty nasal surgery to change the appearance of their nose or breast augmentation to create a fuller figure and/or make the breasts more symmetrical.

Young women also are interested in having clear skin (especially for those who may have suffered from acne in their teens) and the most popular non-invasive procedure is microdermabrasion because it refreshes the skin by improving texture, helps to fade acne scars and sun spots, and encourages growth of healthy, new skin.

Also very popular amongst this age group is Laser Hair Removal. Now that many advanced technologies are offered that very effective in reducing unwanted hair, Laser Hair Removal has grown in popularity to help get rid of unwanted hair and can be done almost anywhere on the body.

Late 30s to 50: Popular Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Aesthetic Treatments
Many women who have had children begin to seek out cosmetic surgery to help restore the body that they once had. This usually happens when the woman decides she is done having kids and she has had a chance to get back into her normal exercise routine. Unfortunately exercise alone often cannot bring back the body that a woman had before pregnancy and nursing but cosmetic surgery can tremendously help. Often a “Mommy Makeover” procedure is preferred because it addresses multiple issues. A typical Mommy Makeover includes abdominal liposuction and/or a tummy tuck, breast lift or augmentation, and liposuction of the hips and/or thighs.

Another concern for this group, especially those in the 40s, is slowing down the hands of time and that is why anti-wrinkle treatments like Botox or Dysport and dermal fillers are very popular. Botox and Dysport relax muscles in the forehead area and around the eyes to give a rested appearance while dermal fillers (such as Restylane and Juvederm) fill in crevices and wrinkles to add volume to the face to give a person a more youthful look. These treatments are easily done at a medical spa, yield nice results, have no downtime, and are affordable to most everyone. They can really turn back the clock without surgery.

Age spots and/or sun spots tend to make their appearance in the 40s too. This, coupled with slower cell turnover of the skin, fine lines, and wrinkles, can make a person look much older than they really are. That is why women in this group seek out procedures to improve their skin’s appearance and bring back the glow of their youth. Laser facial treatments, chemical peels, and skin resurfacing (such as Fractional CO2) are treatments that can help to reverse the signs of aging if done at a reputable medical spa or in a cosmetic surgeon’s office.

50s to mid 60s: Popular Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Aesthetic Treatments

Facelift Surgery by Dr. Terry J. Perkins

Many women in their 50s are still in the workforce and want to look their best both personally and professionally. This is the time when facial cosmetic surgeries are most popular. Eyelid Lift Surgery removes excess skin and repositions the brow to really open up the eyes. You would be surprised how much more alert and approachable a person can look after this surgery. Forehead Lift Surgery is another way to remove the heaviness of the upper eyelids. The forehead frown muscles are also partially removed so the forehead lines are lessened. Facelift Surgery addresses skin laxity in the cheek and neck and gives a person a rejuvenated look.

A non-invasive option that is popular in this age group is skin tightening treatments. These treatments tighten existing collagen, tone and lift the skin. They also can stimulate new collagen production so that the skin looks firmer and fresher.

65+: Popular Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Aesthetic Treatments

Neck Lift Surgery by Dr. Terry J. Perkins

Mature women – in their mid-60s and up – gravitate towards Neck Lift surgery to reduce sagging and wrinkles in neck area and/or to enhance the cosmetic procedures they have done in the past.

As you can see, there is a cosmetic surgery procedure or aesthetic treatment for almost every decade in your life but this does not mean that you have to have each one done! Also, don’t let these trends dictate when to have procedures done.

As I stated in the beginning, cosmetic surgery and aesthetic medical treatments are best done on a case-by-case basis and if you feel strongly about an issue, it is recommended that you discuss your concerns and expectations with your cosmetic surgeon, regardless of what age you are.

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Forehead Lift

At Cosmetic Surgery Center we specialize in facial rejuvenation. As a Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon, I would say that one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries is the Forehead Lift. The overall feedback we receive from patients is that they are very pleased with the result.

Why get a Forehead Lift? As we age, gravity takes over and the forehead area begins to relax. This can result in the brow looking “heavy” and the eyes taking on a hooded appearance. Many patients feel that the heavy brow makes them look tired, unhappy, or even angry and that their eyes, often the first thing a person notices about someone, may look smaller too.

Who is a good candidate for a Forehead Lift? Most patients that we see, both men and women, are in their 50s and older. However, some patients in their 40s are also good candidates for this surgery. Each surgery is done on a case-by-case basis and we would not say yes or no based purely on age.

What can you expect from a Forehead Lift? I perform surgeries from a conservative approach so that my patients will not have a “surprised” look. A successful Forehead Lift will raise the eyebrows back to their normal position, smooth the horizontal frown lines in the forehead, soften the frown lines between the brow area, and improve crow’s feet around the eyes.

How is the surgery done? The surgery is done through three small incisions hidden in the hair area (the hair does not need to be shaved). Partial removal of the muscle in the forehead causes permanent weakening while still retaining some function for normal expressions. The forehead tissue is then shifted upward and held with dissolvable stitches in the desired position. Most patients are glad to hear that general anesthesia is not needed. The Forehead Lift surgery can be done with oral sedation and local anesthesia alone, or in combination with intravenous sedation.

What is the recovery like for Forehead Lift surgery? Patients will go home with a light compression dressing used during early healing to keep swelling and bruising to a minimum. Pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Most people return to work in 5 to 7 days.

How would you describe the result? The lifted forehead and the brows that are returned to their normal position often give people a more youthful appearance and the eyes look less tired, more alert. Overall we would say that the person will appear to be rejuvenated without looking “operated” on.
