Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgeon Addresses Liposuction Myths

Liposuction was the 2nd most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in 2016 (breast augmentation was the 1st). Everyone has heard of liposuction but there are still myths that we get asked about at our Santa Barbara cosmetic surgery practice. Here we address some of the most common preconceptions:

Liposuction is a great procedure for weight loss. Not true! Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Most of the patients we treat are near, or at, their ideal weight and want to get rid of stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to exercise and a healthy diet such as the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, or upper arms.

Liposuction is only for women. Again, not true. While most of the people seeking liposuction are women, men also have the procedure done. In 2016, 11% of liposuction procedures done were on men. Popular treatment areas include the “love handles”, abdomen, and neck for men.

Liposuction gets rid of cellulite. Liposuction removes deep fat just beneath the skin but it may not necessarily remove the cellulite. At my Santa Barbara medical spa, Evolutions, there is a one-time cellulite treatment called Cellfina that is clinically proven to treat the primary structural cause of cellulite and offers long term results (3+ years).

Abdominal liposuction and tummy tucks are the same thing. Liposuction and tummy tucks are not the same thing. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is done to address excess abdominal skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles. Liposuction simply removes the fat. Liposuction is often used in a tummy tuck procedure.

Liposuction is much more expensive than CoolSculpting or SculpSure. This may not necessarily be true. The price difference may be much less than you think. Non-invasive body contouring procedures (such as CoolSculpting and SculpSure) take multiple treatments. CoolSculpting.com states that cost “typically ranges between $2,000 to $4,000” for a personalized treatment plan.

Is Liposuction right for you?
Liposuction can quickly and permanently contour your body with just one treatment.  We are able to perform all of our liposuction procedures comfortably and safely using local anesthesia plus sedation – no general anesthesia needed. Our patients feel that liposuction was an easy and effective way to improve their contours.

Cosmetic Surgery on the Rise Worldwide

At the annual IMCAS Aesthetic Surgery & Cosmetic Dermatology World Congress it was reported that the cosmetic surgery market worldwide grew by 8.3% in 2016 with about $8.9 billion spent on cosmetic surgery procedures and non-invasive aesthetic treatments. The prediction for 2017 and beyond is that the number will keep growing.

The trend towards people wanting to “look their best” is due to many factors, but what we commonly hear in our Santa Barbara cosmetic surgery office is:

  • I want to look the age that I feel.
  • My face reflects a look that says sad/tired/upset/unhappy when I’m not.
  • I need to look younger because the job market is competitive.

Cosmetic surgery is also on the rise because techniques have far advanced since surgeries of a few decades ago which means less downtime and better results. Also, there are many minimally-invasive plastic surgery options available that are less expensive with a shorter recovery time that give a nice, natural result. In addition to better surgery procedures, many patients are surprised that all of our cosmetic surgeries can be performed without going under general anesthesia. We use a combination of local anesthesia and oral sedation alone, or in combination with intravenous sedation that provides relaxation and amnesia.

If you are interested in turning back the clock and desire a natural, rested, “non-operated” look, call our office (805-563-0000) to schedule a consultation today. We specialize in facial rejuvenation and liposuction body contouring.

New Permanent Filler Bellafill in Santa Barbara

Dermal fillers are one of the most common and popular aesthetic treatments done worldwide. Restylane, Restylane Lyft (formerly Perlane), Juvederm, Voluma and Radiesse are some of the well-known fillers available today. Fillers are used to restore volume to an aging face, correct imperfections such as acne scars and wrinkles, and are also used to enhance features (cheeks, lips, jawline). The result of a filler treatment is seen instantaneously and last 6 months or more. The drawback of most fillers are that they are not permanent.
The good news is that there is a new permanent injectable fillerBellafill – now available in the USA and at our Cosmetic Surgery Center practice.
What is Bellafill and how does it work?
Bellafill is composed of a collagen “carrier” and PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) microspheres. The collagen immediately adds volume to the skin for correction while the PMMA microspheres create a matrix that supports your body’s own collagen production in the skin for lasting improvement.
Is Bellafill safe?
Bellafill has been proven safe through 5 years for correction of nasolabial folds or smile lines in the largest and longest prospective dermal filler study ever completed.
What do people have to say about Bellafill?
In a consumer survey, 91% of patients were likely to recommend Bellafill. In a 5-year-post-approval study, 83% of patients said they were “satisfied to very satisfied” with their correction at the end of 5 years.

Santa Barbara Plastic Surgery by Dr. Perkins

I have been practicing plastic surgery in Santa Barbara for more than three decades. I grew up in Santa Barbara and returned after my medical training to serve the Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. I have done many facial cosmetic surgeries and body contouring liposuction procedures and I treat each patient uniquely – as I believe there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

What bothers you?
When I first meet a patient, this is the first question that I ask. I think that it is important to address a patient’s concerns and to educate them as to why they are having these problems.

Formulate a treatment plan.
After my patient has a good understanding of why these problems are occurring, together we formulate a treatment plan that will address the concerns and be affordable.

I specialize in the following facial rejuvenation procedures:

I also specialize in body contouring liposuction procedures for the arms, abdomen, and legs.

Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Barbara and Your Safety

At Cosmetic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara, we strive to meet the needs of each individual patient. At a consultation, we will listen to your concerns and will make sure that we understand them. We then educate you on your options (there is usually more than one way to solve a “problem” area). When the surgery date arrives, both you and our staff will know what is going to be done and we will have the same understanding of the expected outcome. In our decades of performing plastic surgery in Santa Barbara, we have had no “surprises”. Our patients know what to expect from the surgery, recovery, and the result.

CSC_joint-commission-gold-sealJust as we give our patients a detail-oriented understanding of their plastic surgery process, we are also as meticulous about the “behind-the-scenes” part of our cosmetic surgery practice. In fact, our operating facility recently received a re-accreditation from the Joint Commission (we go though the process every 3 years, the maximum accreditation given). The Joint Commission is a quality assessment body that surveys nearly 21,000 health care organizations (such as hospitals) in the United States.

This rigorous and thorough inspection examines our current standards, processes, policies and procedures. Receiving an accreditation and certification by the Joint Commission is a symbol of quality that reflects our organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

In other words, when you have plastic surgery at our practice, you are receiving the safest, highest quality health care in our setting.

Plastic Surgery for Men in Santa Barbara

There aren’t as many articles and blog posts about men having plastic surgery (versus women) but in the last 5 to 7 years, the number of men who have gotten plastic surgery has increased by more than 40%. Men may share less publicly about their plastic surgery experience, but the reality is that they are getting it done.

Most of the men I have seen are interested in plastic surgery for facial rejuvenation, body contouring, or the desire to enhance their appearance. Here are the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men in my Santa Barbara plastic surgery practice.

Facial Rejuvenation for Men
I have heard from many men that the workplace can be competitive. Looking more youthful, especially when interviewing for a job or going up for a promotion, often works in the candidates favor. These two surgeries can rejuvenate an appearance, without looking “done”:

  • Forehead Lift. Relaxation of the forehead tissue can result in a heaviness of the upper lids. This can make the person appear tired or unhappy. A Forehead lift repositions the forehead and brow upward to re-open the eyes, which often changes the appearance of the person to more approachable and happy.
  • Eyelid Lift. Sagging skin, dark circles, and fat bulges around the eyes can make you appear older and tired. Eyelid surgery can correct these problems to give you a more rested and pleasant appearance.
Body Contouring for Men
Liposuction is an effective way to remove fat and improve body contouring (note that it is not a weight loss procedure). For men, abdominal liposuction can effectively treat the “love handles” and other areas that are tough to work off.
Appearance Enhancement for Men
Some men are just interested in improving their facial appearance. Two of the most popular surgeries are:
  • Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery). This surgery can change the external shape of the nose. It can get rid of bumps or correct asymmetry. Nasal surgery can also be done to correct breathing function.
  • Chin Augmentation. A “weak” chin can create facial imbalance in relation to other features of the face. Chin augmentation can be done using a custom implant to create more balance with the features. If the issue is a prominent chin, it can be reduced by removing some bone or soft tissue.
I specialize in performing cosmetic surgeries that give a natural, rested, “non-operated” look. My clients – men and women – often say that after their surgery they receive many positive compliments on their appearance, without people guessing that they have had work “done”.

A Look at CoolSculpting and Liposuction in Santa Barbara

leg-liposuction-santa-barbaraWe are certainly enjoying beautiful Spring weather in Santa Barbara, California, even though we should be in the middle of winter. With beach or pool outings on the mind, this is one of the most popular times for people to inquire about sculpting their body for the upcoming summer and beyond.
The idea of wearing swim suits, shorts, and skirts, brings many people into my office who are interested in losing inches around their thighs. As a Santa Barbara plastic surgeon, I know that outer and inner thigh fat can be the most stubborn fat on a person’s body. I have seen people who exercise regularly, have a healthy diet, and maintain a normal weight, and still are unable to shed the fat on their inner thighs and/or their outer thigh/hip area (often referred to as “saddlebags”). I recommend Liposuction to improve the contours of the legs (and arms, torso and/or breasts).Recently, I have noticed people inquiring about CoolSculpting – a non-surgical treatment to remove unwanted fat – that is being advertised in town. In light of this, I will share with you information about CoolSculpting and Liposuction.

What is CoolSculpting?
The biggest “draw” to CoolSculpting is that it is done without surgery or downtime for recovery. As the name implies, the procedure freezes fat cells that are resistant to diet and exercise. The cold that the cells are subjected to causes an “injury” to the fat cells and encourages apoptosis – death of the cells. As the cells die – which happens over a period of weeks – they are eliminated from the body. People experience tugging, pinching, pulling, and numbness. Following the treatment, as the cells die, there may be more numbness, swelling, bruising, stinging, or pain.

The optimum result is a 20% reduction. Keep in mind that this is not a guarantee. More than 1 treatment may be necessary to see the full 20% reduction and the results may not be seen for 2 to 3 months.

What is Liposuction?
Almost everyone is familiar with Liposuction. It is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from “problem” areas on the body. If necessary, skin removal can be done during the procedure to remove excess skin that is too loose.

Liposuction is not what it used to be in the “old” days. Many people are surprised to find out that they do not have to go under general anesthesia for the procedure. We use a combination of local anesthesia, oral and intravenous sedation that provides comfort and amnesia throughout the procedure.

Liposuction only needs to be done once and has guaranteed results to improve body contours and proportion dramatically. I feel it is important to stress that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure but instead it is used to improve body contours.

What procedure is right for you?
This depends on how much improvement you are looking for:

  • CoolSculpting may improve contours but the improvement may be minimal and not noticeable to other people.
  • Liposuction is only done once and will give you a dramatic result.
If you are interested in body contouring liposuction in Santa Barbara, I invite you to call my Cosmetic Surgery Center practice (805-563-0000) to schedule a consultation today.

Eyelid Lift in Santa Barbara

The delicate skin around the eyes can be one of the first places to show age. Preventative care (such as daily use of eye cream, sunscreen, and large sunglasses) can help to a certain degree but there comes a day when serums and creams are not enough.

How do you know when it is time to start thinking about eyelid lift surgery?
Generally speaking, most patients start looking into eyelid lift surgery when:

  • The eyelids start to look heavy or are overhanging
  • A person’s vision is becoming occluded
  • Bags and/or dark circles under the eyes do not go away
  • Applying eyeshadow makeup is difficult to do
What is the right age to have eyelid surgery?
It depends on the person, their genetics, and their skin type (thinner skin tends to age faster). I have performed eyelid lift surgery in Santa Barbara on people in their 30s and beyond. While most patients tend to be in their 40s and 50s, eyelid lift surgery can be done well into the 80s (provided the person’s health is in good order) with a nice result.
Eyelid surgery – also known as blepharoplasty – can be done on the upper or lower lids or both, if necessary.
  • Upper eyelid surgery addresses the excess/overhanging upper eyelid skin as well as the inner corner fat bulges.
  • Lower eyelid surgery addresses under eye dark circles, fat bulges, and skin laxity.
Either surgery can be performed under local anesthesia combined with oral sedation alone or together with IV sedation. Pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Bruising and swelling will subside quickly with the use of cool compresses and head elevation.
Most people take one week off from work. Sutures are in place for 7 days and returning to make-up and contact lenses usually occurs at 10 days post-op. Aerobic exercise can usually be resumed at 3 weeks post-op.
Eyelid lift surgery is an excellent way to restore a rested, youthful appearance. Click here to view before-and-after eyelid lift surgery pictures on my website.
