Holiday Skin Care Tips from Dr. Perkins

The holidays are rapidly approaching and I thought it would be an appropriate time to share tips on maintaining your skin’s health during the season. Holidays are a joyous and celebratory time, but they also can bring about extra stress and a change in eating (and drinking habits). Stress, indulging in richer foods and more drink, coupled with the dryness in the air and, perhaps, less sleep, will definitely take a toll on your skin. Here are my suggestions for keeping your skin’s glow during this busy time of year:

Stick to Your Skin Care Routine
You may have some late nights or take a vacation, but don’t skip or skimp on your regular cleansing routine. (For my recommended home care regimen, read my past blog post.) If you travel, take your products with you instead of using the hotel soap and moisturizer on your face.

Take Time for a Facial
If your skin starts to look less healthy, a facial can help bring it back into balance. Next month will be busy, so I suggest scheduling your facial now. Having it on your calendar will ensure that you take the time to get the facial and that you get the appointment date that you want. Evolutions Medical & Day Spa‘s estheticians can customize a facial treatment to meet your skin’s needs. Call (805) 687-0212 to book an appointment.

Keep Your Hydration Up
With drier weather, your skin needs to be hydrated on the inside and out. Up your water intake, especially if you are going to be eating salty foods and/or imbibing in cocktails. Too much salt and one-too-many drinks can leave you puffy. Water, and other caffeine free fluids, will help dilute the salt while peppermint tea can ease the digestion.

Prep for Blemishes
It is not always easy to anticipate when you may have a breakout, but if you know that you tend to breakout when you are tired or at certain times in the month, than preemptively add in a Benzoyl Peroxide product (I recommend Obagi’s Clenziderm 5% BPO Therapeutic Lotion). Try to apply it one week before the breakout and only in the spots that typically are affected. This may not entirely prevent the breakout, but it may lessen the severity.

End of Year Clean Out
When the New Year comes around, I often hear the saying, “Out with the old, in with the new.” This is great advice for makeup and skin care products. Check the dates and toss products that are past due. Replace products or, better yet, inquire with a skin care professional about new products that may be more beneficial to your skin. As we age, skin changes, and finding the products that are appropriate will make a big difference in your skin’s overall health.

Here’s to a happy – and healthy – holiday season!

Santa Barbara Skin Care Home Regimen by Dr. Perkins

Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins believes that an effective at-home skin care regimen is an essential part of maintaining younger-looking, beautiful skin. We hope that this home care skin regimen by Dr. Perkins will inspire you to renew (or start) your dedication to healthy skin.

If you are a person who routinely has facials and does a chemical peel every few months, you are not exempt from participating in good skin care practices! Did you know that how you care for your skin at home can account for 50% of the end result? An effective at-home skin care strategy can both enhance the power of your facial / chemical peel / laser facial treatment and can prolong the results. Truly a “win-win” situation.

The home care regimen that I recommend is not something I learned in medical school or from a beauty magazine. The idea came to me one piece at a time as I reflected upon what products the skin benefits from on an ongoing basis. As the founder of Evolutions Medical Spa, and being an active Medical Director there, I have had the benefit of being introduced to and studying many different medical-grade skin care products that have higher active ingredient levels and, thus, have a greater effect on the skin than products purchased at a department store. This is why I recommend using physician grade products for a notable result.

An easy way to remember my universal skin care regimen is by the acronym CHEARS. CHEARS stands for:

  • Cleanser: use a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type; I recommend using the Clarisonic brush to give your skin a deep clean below the surface. Cleanse in the morning and evening.
  • Hydration: hydrate your skin daily using a moisturizer that works with your skin type (dry, oily, combination). Keeping your skin hydrated will keep your skin plump for a fresh complexion. Moisturize once per day.
  • Exfoliant: the use of an exfoliant helps to break down the dead cells on the outermost layer of the skin and promote cell turnover. Exfoliate your skin 2 times per week.
  • Antioxidant: a high quality antioxidant cream helps to combat the signs of aging. Use 3 times per week.
  • Retinoids: use of a topical retinoid cream (commonly known as the brand name, Retin-A) has been proven to be a great wrinkle fighter. Use 2 times per week.
  • Sun protection: use sun protection on your face, neck, decolletage, and hands to ward off fine lines, wrinkles, and excessive pigmentation (age and “liver” spots). Sun protection should be used daily, year round and I recommend products that provide a “physical block” such as those that contain zinc oxide.

Embarking on my home care regimen will enable you to have more control of your skin’s natural aging process. I hope that the above information persuades you to start, or re-dedicate, yourself to renewing your skin health in the years to come. CHEARS to healthy, glowing skin!

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgeon Talks About Getting Rid of Unwanted Pigmentation

With summer winding down, we’ve had a lot of our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center clients inquiring about how to get rid of excess pigmentation (often referred to as sun spots, “liver” spots, or hyperpigmentation) that have resulted from sun overexposure and/or the fluctuation of hormones that happen as we age. Clients want to know how they can combat unwanted pigmentation on their own, using at home skin care products, and also how we can help them in the medical office.

The good news is that there are lots of options! The better news is that you can learn about these options at the educational event, Brightening and Tightening, this Wednesday, September 26th, that is hosted by Evolutions Medical Spa, where Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins (the founder and Medical Director of Evolutions) will be speaking about skin rejuvenation options that are non-surgical and have a great success rate.

Some of the evening’s event will be dedicated to skin tightening (through such revolutionary treatments as Total Tightening which combines the top two non-invasive skin tightening procedures into one highly effective treatment) the other part of the evening will be dedicated to skin lightening where Dr. Perkins will speak about a variety of medical grade products and professional treatments that can control excessive pigmentation and help create a more uniform tone to your skin. While not giving away Dr. Perkins’ entire presentation, we will give you a sneak peek on what you may hear about:

  • The FotoFacial RF™ is one of the safest and most effective intense pulsed light (IPL)-based treatments for excessive pigmentation that is available today. Don’t mistake it for a “PhotoFacial” offered by other doctors’ offices because the FotoFacial RF™ is a trademarked procedure that was co-developed by a dermatologist (Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr.) and a plastic surgeon (Dr. R. Stephen Mulholland) that brings together the best of aesthetic dermatologic skin care and cosmetic plastic surgery into one non-invasive treatment. Clients love the FotoFacial RF™ because many achieve a noticeable and consistent degree of improvement after completing a series.
  • Obagi Medical Products are high quality medical products that are sold only to physicians. Obagi has multiple lines for many skin concerns such as acne and rosacea, but their signature Nu-Derm System is truly transformative. It is often advertised as “anti-aging” whereby it replaces old damaged skin cells (that cause premature aging) with healthy new cells and along the way it also corrects photodamage such as age spots, sallowness in the complexion, and discoloration (or hyperpigmentation). It is a system that takes dedication and time, but the end result is all worth it!
Sometimes clients like to start small before diving into a bigger commitment such as a FotoFacial series or the Obagi Nu-Derm system and they ask Dr. Perkins what he recommends. In this case, Dr. Perkins’ number one recommendation is to stay out of the sun and use sun protection year round, and his next recommendation, for those seeking some reprieve from sun damage or pigmentation issues, is consistent use of an AFA Exfoliating Gel.
The AFA Exfoliating Gel is powered by acidified amino acid and is good for treating sun damaged skin, overly pigmented skin, and acne-prone skin. It stimulates new cell growth, which makes skin appear “younger”, by removing the outer layer of dead cells while restoring the natural moisture-retaining amino acid system of the epidermis. AFA’s break down to monocanic acid, a natural UV filter, that helps the skin better protect itself from harmful UV light. To top it off, AFA gel provides a stable antioxidation to establish a healthy skin environment.
AFA Exfoliating Gel comes in different strengths, making it suitable for all skin types and does not cause a great amount of dryness (if any) or irritation that can be associated with other exfoliating products. Use it daily, or three to five times per week, on freshly cleansed skin (underneath your sunscreen or make up) depending on your skin. Being on an AFA Exfoliating Gel will provide your skin with the immediate benefits of fresher, healthier skin cells and is also be a great way to prep the skin for more aggressive treatments such as the FotoFacial RF™.
The FotoFacial RF™, Obagi skin care products, and AFA Exfoliating Gel products are all available at Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara
If you would like to attend the educational event at Evolutions Medical Spa on Wednesday, September 26th, please call Evolutions at 805-687-0212 to reserve your seat today. There is no charge to attend the event. Light refreshments, a raffle, and promotional pricing will be available to all attendees.

As Perkins witnessed the rise in popularity of non-invasive aesthetic services like the anti-wrinkle treatments Botox and Dysport, dermal fillers and medical grade services such as chemical peels, he had a vision of offering these physician-supervised treatments in a luxurious, day-spa setting. Five years ago, Evolutions Medical Spa was born to offer non-surgical beauty advancements focusing on technology, training (Dr. Perkins personally trains the staff) and results.

Dr. Perkins – and the staff at Evolutions Medical Spa – are excited to celebrate this milestone anniversary by hosting an open house for the general public. Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgeon and Founder of Leading Medical Spa Offers Most Comprehensive Suite of Aesthetic Options

Read a recent press release about Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins, who has a medical spa and cosmetic surgery practice in the same town, and how the businesses provide a full spectrum of cosmetic treatments to enhance appearance.

Dr. Terry Perkins, a Santa Barbara plastic surgeon, has been practicing aesthetic surgeries – facial plastic surgery and liposuction – at his Cosmetic Surgery Center practice for more than three decades. During this time he began providing non-invasive aesthetic treatments such as chemical peels, laser facials, Botox and dermal fillers in the office of his practice. Realizing that not everyone enjoys visiting a doctor’s office for non-invasive and elective treatments, Dr. Perkins decided that he would expand those services to a medical spa located in the same town as his practice. He opened Evolutions Medical Spa almost five years ago and has discovered that his practice and the medical spa are perfect complements to each other.

Both businesses keep Dr. Perkins busy dividing his time between treating patients at Cosmetic Surgery Center, performing surgeries in his surgical suite and seeing patients at Evolutions Medical Spa each week. He plays an active management role in both businesses, a unique prospect these days where many medical spas are run with little medical supervision or without an appropriately qualified physician.

Dr. Perkins adds, “Interacting with patients from both businesses has provided a unique opportunity to crossover patients from one business to another. Those that have seen me at the medical spa for non-invasive treatments have become cosmetic surgery patients and those that have received cosmetic surgery have been treated at the spa for pre-operative and post-operative care and returned for other skin care concerns”.

Offering the most advanced surgical techniques and innovative skin care treatments has kept Dr. Perkins and his businesses at the top of their game. He has been voted Best Cosmetic Surgeon for the past three years by the Santa Barbara NewsPress Readers Choice Awards and Evolutions has been voted Best Medical Spa for the past four years. Accolades and awards, however, only go so far in the cosmetic surgery industry.

What makes Dr. Perkins successful is how his two businesses go hand-in-hand to insure superior results for clients. Dr. Perkins sends his cosmetic surgery patients to Evolutions Medical Spa for pre-operative skin care prep and for post-operative care to accelerate healing. Many of his cosmetic surgery patients continue their skin care at Evolutions – whether it is for facials, medical grade chemical peels, or Botox – to maintain their cosmetic surgery results, stretching their return on investment and having access to Dr. Perkins should a need arise. Being a patient of Dr. Perkins is a great choice. Between Cosmetic Surgery Center and Evolutions Medical Spa, he makes it easy for clients to enhance their appearance, from cosmetic surgery to skin care and everything in between.

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center Provides Non-Invasive Treatments Such as Dermal Fillers, Botox, Dysport

For those of us who are unhappy with the signs of aging that have popped up over the years, but are hesitant to make any surgical changes Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins provides alternative options. At Cosmetic Surgery Center Santa Barbara, Dr. Perkins performs various cosmetic surgeries, as well as providing non-invasive treatments using dermal fillers to reverse the signs of aging and anti-wrinkle treatments (such as Botox and Dysport). Dr. Perkins can perform these non-invasive anti-aging procedures in his Santa Barbara office.

Dermal fillers are designed to be injected into the skin to diminish the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. They can also be used to correct depressions in the skin, scarring, and other skin imperfections. Dr. Perkins believes in tailoring the procedure to the clients’ personal needs. That is why he offers a variety of dermal fillers including Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, and Juvederm. Results are instantaneous and can last from six months to a year or more. Dr. Perkins has also developed a non-surgical face lift using a unique “layering” technique of dermal fillers that can take 10 years off your face. This exciting procedure is called the Layered Liquid Lift and only takes about 90 minutes. Watch videos and see results of a Layered Liquid Lift by Dr. Perkins!

Anti-wrinkle treatments such as Botox or Dysport treat overactive muscles that contract to form wrinkles and are a great option for reducing the wrinkles on your forehead or around the eyes. Botox or Dypsort are FDA approved and the results typically last 3 to 4 months.

Ask Dr. Perkins – Are There New Facelift Options?

Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins answers questions about cosmetic surgery procedures from his readers and clients. If you have a question for Dr. Perkins, please email him at with “Ask the Cosmetic Surgeon” in the subject line.

Q: Hi Dr. Perkins. I am ready to explore facelift options and since I can only take limited time off from my job for recovery, I am wondering if you perform any facelifts that are less invasive with a shorter recovery time?

A: A facelift is a big commitment and if you feel you do not have adequate time for recovery, then exploring other options is a smart idea. Recently I introduced the Layered Liquid Lift at Evolutions Medical Spa Santa Barbara – a luxurious, day-spa that I founded for people to receive medical grade aesthetic treatments.
The Layered Liquid Lift is a non-surgical facelift done by using various injectable dermal fillers in a unique layering technique that transforms the face from the inside out. The Layered Liquid Lift will plump the skin, filling in wrinkles, restoring fullness and enhancing facial features, similar to what a surgical facelift can do. The procedure takes about 90 minutes and lasts about 12 to 18 months.
The benefit of the Layered Liquid Lift is that it will give you a preview of what you can expect with a traditional surgical facelift without having to undergo the surgery and recovery. A great option for you until you feel ready to commit to a surgical facelift.

Face Lifts in Santa Barbara by Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins

If you are reading this, chances are you are in the important decision-making process of where and who to get a face lift from in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara has many cosmetic and plastic surgeons, which may actually make the decision of who to use and where to get it done more difficult.

It is very exciting to have a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon and sometimes overwhelming. During your consultation, discuss your goals and make it a point to find out about the doctor. Keep in mind that this is your opportunity to “interview” the doctor too. Here is a list of suggested questions to discuss with the prospective doctor:

    • How long has the doctor been in practice?

    • Is the doctor board certified for cosmetic/plastic surgery?

    • Where will the surgery take place? If the surgery is done in a surgical suite, outside of the hospital, ask the doctor how s/he handles emergencies during the surgery. Will you be taken to the nearest Emergency Room if there is a complication?

    • Will you have access to the doctor before the surgery to address any additional concerns?

    • What type of post-operative care does the doctor and his staff offer?

    • How do you access the doctor after the surgery if you are having complications or questions? Especially during the weekend when the doctor’s office is most likely not open.

  • Ask to see before-and-after pictures of work done by the doctor.

When it comes to face lifts, Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins is a natural choice. He has been doing facial aesthetic surgery for over 30 years in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and is double board certified by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the AAOHNS (facial plastic surgery). He performs procedures in his surgical suite at his Cosmetic Surgery Center Medical Group practice. What sets Dr. Perkins apart from the others is that he prides himself in giving his patients a “natural, non-operated” look.

A face lift by Dr. Perkins will address skin laxity in the neck and cheeks. It will reposition, refine, and support deep tissues like the midfacial fat pad and the jowl as well as tighten the skin. Incisions are barely visible, hidden in the hair and around the ears.
Results from a face lift by Dr. Perkins is a rested and rejuvenated look. Dr. Perkins also does minimally invasive check-neck lifts with a shorter healing time. If you are not ready for a full face lift surgery, Dr. Perkins has also developed an exclusive protocol that is non-invasive with no down time called Total Tightening which is performed at Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara where he is the founder and medical director. Read more about Total Tightening on the Evolutions Medical Spa’s website.
