If you are reading this, chances are you are in the important decision-making process of where and who to get a face lift from in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara has many cosmetic and plastic surgeons, which may actually make the decision of who to use and where to get it done more difficult.
It is very exciting to have a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon and sometimes overwhelming. During your consultation, discuss your goals and make it a point to find out about the doctor. Keep in mind that this is your opportunity to “interview” the doctor too. Here is a list of suggested questions to discuss with the prospective doctor:
- How long has the doctor been in practice?
- Is the doctor board certified for cosmetic/plastic surgery?
- Where will the surgery take place? If the surgery is done in a surgical suite, outside of the hospital, ask the doctor how s/he handles emergencies during the surgery. Will you be taken to the nearest Emergency Room if there is a complication?
- Will you have access to the doctor before the surgery to address any additional concerns?
- What type of post-operative care does the doctor and his staff offer?
- How do you access the doctor after the surgery if you are having complications or questions? Especially during the weekend when the doctor’s office is most likely not open.
- Ask to see before-and-after pictures of work done by the doctor.
When it comes to face lifts, Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins is a natural choice. He has been doing facial aesthetic surgery for over 30 years in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and is double board certified by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the AAOHNS (facial plastic surgery). He performs procedures in his surgical suite at his Cosmetic Surgery Center Medical Group practice. What sets Dr. Perkins apart from the others is that he prides himself in giving his patients a “natural, non-operated” look.
A face lift by Dr. Perkins will address skin laxity in the neck and cheeks. It will reposition, refine, and support deep tissues like the midfacial fat pad and the jowl as well as tighten the skin. Incisions are barely visible, hidden in the hair and around the ears.
Results from a face lift by Dr. Perkins is a rested and rejuvenated look. Dr. Perkins also does minimally invasive check-neck lifts with a shorter healing time. If you are not ready for a full face lift surgery, Dr. Perkins has also developed an exclusive protocol that is non-invasive with no down time called Total Tightening which is performed at Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara where he is the founder and medical director. Read more about Total Tightening on the Evolutions Medical Spa’s website.

Q. Dr. Perkins, I have heard a lot about the “Lifestyle Lift” – a face lift procedure that is supposed to be quick with less healing time than a traditional face lift. What do you know about it and do you perform that procedure?
A. The Lifestyle Lift is a procedure that was developed by a doctor and has been heavily marketed. While there is nothing wrong with the procedure, it is important to note that it is not anything that is revolutionary or even markedly different than procedures that have been performed by surgeons for years. Essentially it is a “short flap face lift” that rejuvenates the lowers two-thirds of the face. While it can result in a “refreshed” appearance, it is usually more suited for younger patients. Because one size does not fit all, I prefer to meet with my patients and assess their needs on a case by case basis. If it is appropriate, I can certainly perform a procedure very similar to the Lifestyle Lift. However, if the patient is looking for facial enhancement and longevity there are many other options that we can do to work more on the under structure rather than doing the Lifestyle Lift.
Regarding healing time, there are now many different options in both the aggressiveness of the treatment and the associated downtime. The range is from no downtime (with skin tightening procedures that we perform at Evolutions Medical Spa) to 7 – 10 days for full facelifts. Other surgical procedures only have 2 – 3 days of downtime. We customize our treatments based on what the individual’s goals are and what their schedules allow. Regardless, we do our best to make sure that each patient is as comfortable as possible before, during, and after the procedure.

In a slow economy, people are cutting back on expenditures such as mid-morning lattes, personal trainers or housekeepers. Interestingly enough, however, plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery may not be getting hit as hard as other businesses.
“People live to a ripe old age these days and want to look as young as they feel,” said Dr. Terry J. Perkins, a Santa Barbara, CA cosmetic surgeon and owner of Cosmetic Surgery Center Medical Group based in Santa Barbara, California. “In addition, the slim job market encourages people of retirement age (who cannot afford to retire) to compete with younger professionals and put their best face forward – literally.”
“I have met many people that are confident at what they do, but not at how they look,” continues Dr. Perkins. “And this lack of confidence can show through in an interview or in the workplace. I have seen firsthand how making someone feel more comfortable with their aesthetic appearance has greatly improved their confidence and upped their self-esteem.”
Dr. Perkins has been practicing aesthetic cosmetic surgery in the tri-counties of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo for over 30 years. For people looking for aesthetic enhancements with less downtime, Dr. Perkins provides a number of non-invasive options for skin rejuvenation. He was part of a group of select doctors picked to conduct a study leading to the approval of Botox Cosmetic.
“With such an unpredictable stock market these days, people are finding that an investment in themselves provides unlimited, almost immediate, returns,” said Dr. Perkins. People can make their own coffee, exercise without a personal trainer and clean their own house, but removing bags under their eyes or erasing wrinkles is not so easy to accomplish without the help of a medical professional, which is exactly why Dr. Perkins, and other cosmetic and plastic surgeons, are still feeling secure in this economy.
Professionals never have a second chance to make a first impression and in tough economic times, aesthetic enhancements can boost appearance, confidence and for some, a competitive professional edge.
