Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Slang

At our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center we believe in educating our patients so they are be able to make an informed decision about their surgery options. Occasionally, this education includes teaching them the proper terminology for slang or common terms that refer to cosmetic surgery or problem areas on the body. We take any cosmetic procedure very seriously and when we speak with a patient we want to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Here is a list of cosmetic surgery procedures and their slang or common terms associated with them:

Slang term: Nose Job
Rhinoplasty is nasal surgery that can be done to help the appearance or breathing function of the nose. It is very often referred to as a “nose job.”

Neck Lift Surgery
Slang terms: Turkey Neck or Waddle
Skin laxity in the neck may be referred to as “turkey neck” or “waddle.” Neck Lift Surgery addresses sagging skin, muscle banding, and fat accumulation in the neck area. The goal of the surgery is to make the neck contour what it once was.

Slang terms: Tummy Tuck, Muffin Top, Roll
Abdominoplasty involves getting rid of extra fat and excess skin in the abdominal area. Extra fat in the abdomen is often referred to as a “muffin top” or “roll” as it protrudes out of the waistband of pants. Abdominoplasty is commonly referred to as a “Tummy Tuck.”

Common term: Eye Lift, Eyelid Lift
Blepharoplasty is done to correct under eye issues (such as bags or sagging skin) and upper eye issues. It is commonly referred to as an “Eye Lift” or “Eyelid Lift.”

Slang terms: Bat Wings, Wings, Kimono Arms
A brachioplasty procedure addresses excess skin in the upper arm area that is referred to as a “bat wing”, “wing”, or “kimono arm”. Liposuction and, if necessary, skin removal can re-shape the arm’s appearance.

Leg Liposuction
Slang term: Saddlebags
Leg liposuction re-contours the upper and inner leg area. Excess fat on the hip and outer thigh is often referred to as “saddlebags.”

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Abdominal Liposuction and Tummy Tucks

We’re pretty sure you’ve heard of the expression “muffin top” and not in reference to baked goods! The popularity of low-rise jeans has helped contribute to this slang term which refers to overhanging fat that protrudes or spills over the waistline of jeans or pants. Women are usually more subject to a muffin top and that may be because women tend to put on weight in the hips and thighs more readily than men. Other women develop muffin tops after going through pregnancy due to stretched out skin and extra weight that is gained in the midsection. Either way, the general consensus amongst many cosmetic surgery patients is that the muffin top is one of the hardest areas to trim down and that is when they turn to Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins for help.

Most women who seek out abdominal cosmetic surgery have reached their goal weight and are in good physical shape. Despite endless hours at the gym and mindful eating habits, the bulge in the abdominal area won’t budge. If this is the case for you, then you may be a good candidate for abdominal liposuction or even a Mini or regular Tummy Tuck.

Abdominal Liposuction is done with small incisions that are hidden in the navel, pubic hair or under the bikini line. Dr. Perkins will evenly remove the fat so that you are left with a uniform thin layer of fat instead of a bulge.

For some people, the removal of excess skin is needed to get a better result. When this is the case, the surgery becomes known as a Mini Tummy Tuck. The ideal candidate for a Mini Tummy Tuck has most of their issues below the belly button. The incision is similar to that of a C-section incision and is done at upper edge of the pubic hair and can be well hidden underneath bathing suit bottoms and underwear. If there is a larger amount of excess skin that needs to be removed, then a regular Tummy Tuck can be done. The incision may extend from hip to hip and the abdominal muscles are sewn together to further flatten the lower abdomen.

For any of the above procedures, the end result is more definition of the waistline, a tighter, flatter abdomen and no more referrals to “muffin top”, unless you’re at a bakery!

Cosmetic Surgery Highlight: Upper Body Liposuction & Tummy Tucks

Have you reached your goal weight – or are almost at it – but feel frustrated with excess skin and/or pudgy areas that won’t budge? You are not alone. Many of our patients seek out liposuction to address stubborn areas such as the thighs, hips, abdomen, and arms. This blog post is about upper body liposuction for the arms and tummy tucks for the abdomen – you can read about lower body liposuction for the thighs and legs here.

Upper Arm Liposuction (Brachioplasty)

For some people, countless pushups, tricep exercises, and planks can’t get rid of the localized fat and excess skin in the upper arms. This is often referred to as a “bat wing”. If fat is the main issue, it usually can be treated with liposuction and the skin will contract after the removal. If the skin is too loose (which can happen with a large amount of weight loss or with loss of skin elasticity as we age), a skin removal excision can be done. Incisions will be inside the arm and above the elbow and will not be visible from the front or the back. If only a small amount of skin is removed, the removal can be confined to or near the armpit so there is minimal or no scar visibility.

Abdominal Liposuction and Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

After childbirth, many people find that their stomach and flank area is not the same. If you’ve got “bulges” in the abdomen area that won’t budget (despite healthy eating and regular exercise) then you are a good candidate for abdominal liposuction. Small incisions are made under the navel, pubic hair, or  under the bikini line and are easily hidden.

If you have some excess abdominal skin, you and Dr. Perkins may elect to do a “Mini Tummy Tuck“. The excision will lie at the upper edge of the pubic hair and will be hidden under bathing suit bottoms or underwear.

If you have a greater amount of excess abdominal skin, a regular “Tummy Tuck” may be desired. This involves the full abdomen and making an incision that is slightly longer than a C-section. The abdominal muscles are tightened and detachment and repositioning of the belly button allow the tissues to shift. The end result is usually more definition of the waist and a flatter, tighter abdomen.

It is important to remember that liposuction at Santa Barbara’s Cosmetic Surgery Center is considered a body contouring procedure and not a weight loss solution.

Abdominal Liposuction and Tummy Tucks are Slimming and Satisfying

Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins has been performing cosmetic surgery for over 30 years. People see Dr. Perkins for facelifts, rhinoplasty, neck lift surgery, and also for body contouring through liposuction.  Many of those who seek liposuction from Dr. Perkins are women who have had one or more children and cannot shed stubborn stomach and flank fat, regardless of leading a healthy lifestyle and steadily exercising.

For many women, one or more pregnancies can really affect the abdominal area. After the beautiful baby is born, the stretched stomach skin may never return to it’s pre-pregnancy tautness. Additionally, sometimes the abdominal muscles become separated, which can affect the ability to re-firm the stomach area through exercise. It can be very disheartening to shed the pregnancy weight but be left with a pooch that looks like the beginning of another pregnancy!

It is usually at this point that women seek the help of a cosmetic surgeon for abdominal liposuction or a tummy tuck to reclaim the belly they once had.  Abdominolplasty, commonly known as a “tummy tuck”, can address either the full abdomen or the lower abdomen below the belly button. When the full abdomen is treated, an incision is made that is slightly longer than a C-section to allow the doctor to tighten the abdominal muscles and liposuction out excess fat.  The belly button is detached and repositioned and excess skin is removed. The end result is usually more definition of the waist and a flatter, tighter abdomen.  A “mini tummy tuck” involves the lower abdomen where muscle tightening may be done if the excess is limited to below the belly button. Excess skin is removed and this procedure is done with a shorter incision.

Dr. Perkins has observed that his patients who underwent abdominal liposuction and/or a tummy tuck are thrilled with their result. With a flatter stomach and more accentuated waistline, overall body appearance can change dramatically – allowing clothes to fit better – and giving the person a more positive body image. In fact, it’s not only Dr. Perkins’ patients who feel this boost.  The April issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery studied the self-esteem of patients who had cosmetic liposuction and/or tummy tuck surgery. The average age of the patients was 42 and the self-esteem assessment was taken four months after the surgery. Overall, 86% reported an improved sense of self-esteem post procedure and about 70% reported improved quality of life. So it seems that women who get abdominal surgery end up with a slimmer waist and a more satisfied sense of self.  Not a bad deal!

Getting Rid of Excess Skin After Pregnancy or Weight Loss

Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Terry Perkins, gets lots of inquiries about how to tighten skin after pregnancy or a significant weight loss.  While there are lots of claims on the internet that certain lotions and potions can “firm and tighten”, the reality is that most of these products don’t offer the results that people are truly seeking.

Excessive weight gain, whether it is through pregnancy or accumulated over the years, can significantly stretch the skin. Once the weight is lost (or the baby is born and the rest of the pregnancy weight is shed), the skin may not be as taut as it once was.  The best way to get rid of excess, sagging skin is through surgery.  Skin excision surgery is common and may be done in combination with liposuction.

Removing excess skin can be done in many places on the body:

Arm Lift and Arm Liposuction: Many people (even those who have not gained extra weight) suffer from excess skin in the upper arms (“bat wings”).  If fat is the main issue, liposuction can be done and the skin may contract without the need for skin removal.  For those with too much loose skin, removal is done so that the scar is placed inside the arm (against the body), above the elbow, so it is not visible from the front or back. If there is only a small amount of loose skin, the skin removal can often be confined to or near the armpit.

Abdomen Surgery / Tummy Tuck: Dr. Perkins can remove skin in the abdominal area in a “mini tummy tuck” procedure.  The incision is done at the upper edge of the pubic hair line so it can be hidden. If need be, the incision can be extended far to the sides (a “tummy tuck”) to avoid a “dog ear” pooch of the skin and the abdominal muscles are sewn together to further flatten the lower abdomen.

Leg Liposuction / Thigh Lift: Loose skin on the legs most often occurs in the inner thigh area. Liposuction can be done to remove any excess fat (as the inner thigh can be a “trouble” spot and some may prefer to have liposuction along with skin removal) and the skin removal is done through incisions in the groin and upper thigh area that can be hidden with underwear or a bathing suit.

Getting rid of excess skin is a great way to give a person a new shape – or re-store an old one!

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery “Mommy Makeover” Procedures by Dr. Perkins

With the kids are settled back in school, and the holidays are still a few months away, now is a good time to have cosmetic surgery procedures done. Many women have inquired about a “Mommy Makeover” package by Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins. Essentially it is a series of cosmetic surgical procedures to help women restore their post-pregnancy body. The “Mommy Makeover” usually consists of a breast lift and/or breast augmentation, abdominal surgery to remove excess skin and/or fat (commonly known as a “tummy tuck”) and/or body sculpting with liposuction.

After childbirth many moms find that they are left with unwanted bulges or excess skin in the areas of the abdomen hips and/or thighs that are very hard to shed, despite intense exercise and a conscientious diet. The weight gain from pregnancy can cause the skin to be overly stretched out which often times can only be corrected through plastic surgery where the skin can be excised and the fat can be removed.

If you are getting a “Mommy Makeover”, you are probably going to get two or more of the following procedures, most likely done at the same time, under general anesthesia:

Tummy Tuck: Excess fat bulges in the abdomen and flanks can sometimes be treated with liposuction alone. If the doctor decides to remove excess abdominal skin, the procedure known as a “tummy tuck”, an incision is made along the upper edge of the pubic hairline. The incision may be as small as a C-section scar, a “mini tummy tuck”, or may be from hip to hip. The doctor may choose to sew together the abdominal muscles that sometimes split during pregnancy to further flatten the abdomen. Whether a person has a “mini” or a regular tummy tuck, plan for plenty of downtime to allow for proper healing.

Breast Lift and/or Breast Augmentation: Breast augmentation is usually done with silicone or saline implants. This is primarily done to restore volume in the breasts that often become “deflated”, especially in the mothers that nursed their babies. Breast augmentation can also increase the breast size, and this is left to the discretion of the patient. A breast lift can be done, with our without augmentation, to correct sagging breasts. At Cosmetic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara, we do not do a breast augmentation with implants. Dr. Perkins does a natural breast augmentation using the patient’s own body fat that was removed through liposuction. The fat that is removed can be strategically placed in the breast area, allowing the doctor to fill in certain spots or to correct unevenness. Sometimes enough fat is obtained, allowing the patient to go up one cup size.

Liposuction of the Hips and Thighs: Not always necessary for all “Mommy Makeover” candidates, liposuction can be done to reduce the circumference of the thighs and the hip area. Liposuction body contouring can also be done in the knees, calves and ankles, but the surgeon must be skilled in this area because over-treatment can result in problems that are difficult to correct. Some moms may take their treatment further and address the stretch marks that developed during their pregnancy, most commonly on the abdomen and the back from the rapidly growing baby. Stretch mark reduction is something that can be done at Evolutions Medical Spa in Santa Barbara, utilizing Dr. Perkins’ exclusive Stretch Mark Therapy protocol that yields results.

A “Mommy Makeover” can offer wonderful results but a mother has to be fully prepared for what it entails such as being able to get plenty of rest and down time after the surgery. Women who have gone through the “Mommy Makeover” often feel a great boost in their body-image confidence, resulting not only in a positive effect for themselves, but also for the children that they are caring for.

Santa Barbara Liposuction after Weight Loss? Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins Answers Your Questions

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Terry Perkins answers reader’s questions about Santa Barbara plastic surgery. If you have a question about cosmetic surgery, especially face lifts and liposuction in Santa Barbara, send Dr. Perkins an email with “Ask the Cosmetic Surgeon” in the subject line.

Q: Hi Dr. Perkins. I have just lost over 100 pounds after being over weight for many years! I am so excited with my “new me” but what bothers me the most is the excess skin on my upper arms, thighs and stomach. Tell me more about the skin removal procedure and will my health insurance cover it?

A: First of all, I’d like to say Congratulations for such an impressive feat! I have treated patients before in your situation and, like you, most of them have worked very hard to take the weight off and having the excess skin removed is their “prize” at the end of the race, so to speak. My patients have gotten excellent results and are very happy to be able to wear shorts, sleeveless shirts, bathing suits, etc., without having excess skin hanging on them.
All the liposuction and body contouring procedures would be done out of my Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center facility and you would be able to choose the treatments you want and have them done together or separately. Please understand that since I have not seen you in person I am giving you the most likely scenario(s) for each treatment and my recommendation would be for you to schedule a plastic surgery consultation with me at 805.563.0000 so we can tailor the body contouring procedures to your specific needs.
    • Arm Liposuction and Arm Skin Removal: The excess skin on the upper arm often looks like a “bat wing” hanging down. If there is fat, the fat can be liposuctioned. In the case of too much loose skin, the skin is removed leaving a scar on inside of the arm, above the elbow and will not be visible from the front or back. If there is only a small amount of loose skin, the removal can often be confined to or near the armpit – which means minimal or no scar visibility.

    • Abdomen Liposuction and Abdomen Skin Removal (Santa Barbara Tummy Tuck): If a smaller amount of skin needs to be removed, a “mini” tummy tuck is usually sufficient. The mini tummy tuck is done with a small incision that will lie at the upper edge of the pubic hair (similar to a C-section scar). If a larger portion of skin needs to be removed, a tummy tuck can be done, where the abdominal muscles are usually sewn together to further flatten the lower abdomen and the incision may be extended from hip to hip.

  • Thigh Liposuction and Thigh Skin Removal: If there is fat to be removed, it can be done through liposuction on the inner and outer (“saddlebag”) thighs. If skin removal is needed, this is done for the inner thighs. The incision line will lie on the groin and upper thigh area so that it is hidden.
As for your question about health insurance, we do not take health insurance and, in most cases, liposuction and body contouring procedures are not covered. However, we will provide you with any information you need so that you may make a claim with your insurance company if appropriate. We do have a payment plan through Care Credit.

Ask Santa Barbara Plastic Surgeon Dr. Perkins – Tried & True vs. New Cosmetic Procedures

Do you have questions about a cosmetic procedure? Dr. Terry J. Perkins of Cosmetic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara is happy to address any of your questions or concerns. Send us an email and we’ll be sure to feature your question soon!

Q. Dr. Perkins, I am always hearing about “new” procedures or things to re-shape a women’s body and/or remove cellulite such as specific exercises, fat-burning pills, special massages etc., How much credence do you give these and what are your recommendations to re-shape and, specifically, tighten my body after having children?
A. As a cosmetic surgeon who has been in the practice for more than 30 years, in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, I have seen lots of these fads come and go. I have also seen lots of women who are interested in re-claiming the body they had before having children. While I believe cosmetic surgery can achieve great results, I don’t want people to think that it is the only solution. I encourage women who are trying to shed extra weight after having a child to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle – make good food choices and try to exercise (always hard to do with a new baby, but walking with a stroller can be a very effective workout!). Sometimes, however, doing all of that will not tighten the belly or shrink the thighs sufficiently and that is when I can help out. Bulges is such areas can be treated with liposuction and often a mini tummy tuck can complete the procedure. The excision is done at the upper edge of the pubic hair so as to leave a minimal scar that is easily hidden with a bathing suit bottom.

I treat every patient on a case-by-case basis. If you would like a consultation in-person with me, please call our Cosmetic Surgery Center Santa Barbara office to set up an appointment at 805-563-0000.
