FAQs About Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Barbara

During cosmetic surgery consultations at our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center, our patients ask many questions – and not just about the procedure! To help you make a more informed choice about cosmetic surgery, here are some of our most popular questions that are asked, and our answers.

Q: I am not sure if I am ready for surgery, but I am interested. Should I come in now for a consultation?
A: We recommend coming in for a consultation when you have specific concerns. We will evaluate your concerns and together come up with a plan.

Q: How long do I have to wait from consultation to the day of surgery?
A: Generally your surgery can be scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks after your consultation.

Q: Where are the surgeries performed?
A: We perform all of our surgeries in our outpatient facility that is located near Cottage Hospital.

Q: Do you take medical insurance? Will you bill my insurance company?
A: No. We do not take medical insurance and we will not bill your insurance company.

Q: How much will my cosmetic surgery cost?
A: Cost depends on the procedure(s) performed. A written quotation will be given to you at the time of your consultation.

Q: Do you have payment plans?
A: Yes, you can set up a payment plan through Care Credit. Read more about Care Credit here.

Q: Is my medical information confidential?
A: Your medical information is always kept private. It can be discussed with your family member only if you say OK.

Q: Do I have to go under general anesthesia?
A: No. All of our facial surgeries and body liposuction can be performed safely and comfortably using local anesthesia and conscious sedation.

Q: How much pain can I expect after surgery?
A: Most facial procedures (including full face lifts) and body contouring surgeries have remarkably little pain – and can be easily controlled with oral medication.

Q: I have some medical issues – can I still have surgery?
A: It will depend on what your medical issues are. As cosmetic surgeries are usually elective, there is never a reason to put any patient at risk. If necessary, “medical clearance” will be requested from your family MD.

Q: I’m from out of town. Where do you recommend that I stay?
A: We have a webpage for visitors to Santa Barbara including hotel recommendations, dining options, and attractions that you may be interested in during your visit.

Q: I live locally, can I drive myself home?
A: No. Please make arrangements for a friend or relative to take you home after the surgery.

Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Surgery in Your 40s

Cosmetic surgery is becoming more prevalent among 40-somethings than ever before. The upward trend amongst this age group may stem from our culture’s obsession of staying “forever young” coupled with the pressure to look good in social media pictures. But most importantly, the 40-somethings that we see at our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center simply say that they don’t “feel in their 40s” even though their face may say otherwise.

Aging is always happening, but the decade of the 40s is usually the time when visible signs start to appear. Collagen and elastin production in the skin slows down while sun and environmental damage start to show up, and the result is fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, skin laxity and sagging.

While there are many “non-invasive” options such as Botox / Dysport, dermal fillers, and lasers, more 40-somethings are turning toward more permanent options such as cosmetic surgery because they aren’t interested in multiple med spa visits to keep up with Botox or fillers and/or they are no longer getting the optimum results from those treatments.

The good news is that for most people in their 40th decade, there are more options than if they waited two more decades to rewind the clock. The essential foundation of the face is still present in the 40s and often minimally invasive (MI) cosmetic surgery procedures can be used to achieve the desired result. (We must add that MI procedures can be a good option for those who want to “maintain” the benefits of a previous plastic surgery.)

MI cosmetic procedures give noticeable improvement, cost less, and have less recovery “downtime”. In addition, they have smaller or no visible incisions. MI treatments can address all areas of the face – the forehead, eyebrows and temporal region, lower eyelids, cheeks and mid-face, and the area under the chin (submentum) – and the hands.

Are You Bothered By Your Ears?

Many of our patients have felt a dissatisfaction with their ears from a very young age. The most common concern related to ear appearance is that they “stick out” too much. Otoplasty – often referred to as “ear pinning” surgery – can change the relationship of the ear to the face and the side of the head.

Here are a few facts about Otoplasty:

  • It can be performed on a child as young as 6 or 7 years old (unlike most other plastic surgeries) because at that age the ears are 90% of the size they will be as an adult.
  • This surgery is not just for ears that stick out.
  • It can address the shape and symmetry of the ears, including reducing the size of the earlobes if they are too large.
  • The surgery does not require general anesthesia. It can be performed under local anesthesia combined with oral sedation alone or together with an IV sedation.
  • Pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with Ibuprofen or Tylenol.
  • The recovery time for an adult or a child is about 1 to 2 weeks.

A successful Otoplasty can be a dramatic transformation for a child, a teen, or an adult.

Facelift Surgery in Santa Barbara by Dr. Perkins

Facelift surgery (cheek/neck lift) restores a youthful, natural appearance. When a person has a facelift, the results include:

  • Returning fullness to the cheeks
  • Lifting of the jowls
  • Smoothing the neck

Mid-facial implants or fat grafting might be suggested to further enhance the procedure if indicated.

What is done during Facelift Surgery?
Some surgeons simply pull the facial skin tighter which can result in an “operated” or “wind tunnel” appearance. Dr. Perkins feels it is important to lift and support the deep tissues so the skin tightening doesn’t need to be the main component of lift. By doing this patients should never have a stretched appearance and the deeper support will add longevity to the result. Incisions are hidden in the natural creases around the ears and in the hair (the hair does not need to be shaved).

Does Facelift Surgery Require General Anesthesia?
No, it does not. Many people are surprised to hear that general anesthesia is not needed for facelift surgery. Instead, we use a combination of oral, IV and local anesthesia to provide relaxation and control any discomfort. And with this technique patients usually have little or no pain, so Tylenol or ibuprofen is all that is needed during recovery. A light elastic dressing is used for the first 4-5 days and most patients return to work in 8-10 days.

New Year, New You! Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Options

Can you believe another year has flown by? Each year we get the chance to meet and work with new patients, as well as those who have returned, and we enjoy helping every one of you to look and feel your best.

If plastic surgery in Santa Barbara is on your “to do” list for the New Year, there is no better time than now to start planning. Winter is when most people tend to stay indoors, travel less, and sleep more – all of which are ideal conditions to recuperate from a cosmetic surgery procedure. In our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center practice, we specialize in facial cosmetic surgery, minimally-invasive (MI) cosmetic surgery, skin rejuvenation, and liposuction body contouring.

There are many options for facial cosmetic surgery, including:

  • Facelift: to address skin laxity in the cheek and neck
  • Forehead Lift: to reposition the forehead and brow upward
  • Eye Lift: to correct sagging skin or fat bulges in the eye area
  • Rhinoplasty (Nasal Surgery): to help either appearance or breathing function of the nose
  • Neck Lift: to address sagging skin and local fat accumulation in the neck area
  • Lip Enhancement: to add volume to lips (either with an implant, grafting your own fat, or with injectable fillers)
  • Chin Lift: to enhance a “weak” chin or modify one that is too prominent
  • Ear Tuck / Ear Pinning: to address ears that are too prominent or stick out from the side of the head
  • Chemabrasion Skin Resurfacing: to improve skin that has wrinkles, fine lines, scars, acne scars, and/or sagging

We also have minimally-invasive (MI) surgical options for patients with early changes or those who want to “maintain” the benefit of previous surgery. These give noticeable improvement with less cost and “downtime”. Learn more about MI surgery and options available here.

We also offer treatment options to tighten and contour your problem areas through liposuction for the abdomen, arms, legs, and hips/flanks. Learn more about liposuction here.

We practice cosmetic surgery in Santa Barbara that gives a natural, rejuvenated result.

Arm Liposuction in Santa Barbara

Saggy upper arms can be caused by decreased collagen and elastin levels (which happens naturally as we age) or from weight gain. When the upper arms are flabby, they may have a “batwing” or “kimono” appearance that may make someone self conscious. Unfortunately, the localized fat and loose skin of the upper arm can be one of the most stubborn areas to shed or tone, even with proper diet and exercise. When this is the case, arm liposuction can make a big difference in the appearance of the arm.

Arm liposuction can be done with or without skin excision. When fat is the main issue, it can usually be treated with liposuction alone and the skin will contract without the need for skin removal. When there is too much excess skin, commonly this happens after weight loss, skin removal can be done along with the liposuction. The skin removal scar is placed on the inside of the arm (against the body), above the elbow, and is not visible from the front or back. If only a small amount of skin is removed, the skin removal can often be confined to or near the armpit.

Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgeon Addresses Liposuction Myths

Liposuction was the 2nd most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in 2016 (breast augmentation was the 1st). Everyone has heard of liposuction but there are still myths that we get asked about at our Santa Barbara cosmetic surgery practice. Here we address some of the most common preconceptions:

Liposuction is a great procedure for weight loss. Not true! Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Most of the patients we treat are near, or at, their ideal weight and want to get rid of stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to exercise and a healthy diet such as the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, or upper arms.

Liposuction is only for women. Again, not true. While most of the people seeking liposuction are women, men also have the procedure done. In 2016, 11% of liposuction procedures done were on men. Popular treatment areas include the “love handles”, abdomen, and neck for men.

Liposuction gets rid of cellulite. Liposuction removes deep fat just beneath the skin but it may not necessarily remove the cellulite. At my Santa Barbara medical spa, Evolutions, there is a one-time cellulite treatment called Cellfina that is clinically proven to treat the primary structural cause of cellulite and offers long term results (3+ years).

Abdominal liposuction and tummy tucks are the same thing. Liposuction and tummy tucks are not the same thing. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is done to address excess abdominal skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles. Liposuction simply removes the fat. Liposuction is often used in a tummy tuck procedure.

Liposuction is much more expensive than CoolSculpting or SculpSure. This may not necessarily be true. The price difference may be much less than you think. Non-invasive body contouring procedures (such as CoolSculpting and SculpSure) take multiple treatments. CoolSculpting.com states that cost “typically ranges between $2,000 to $4,000” for a personalized treatment plan.

Is Liposuction right for you?
Liposuction can quickly and permanently contour your body with just one treatment.  We are able to perform all of our liposuction procedures comfortably and safely using local anesthesia plus sedation – no general anesthesia needed. Our patients feel that liposuction was an easy and effective way to improve their contours.

Popular Facial Rejuvenation Procedures

Facial rejuvenation – surgical and non-invasive – is on the rise, according to 2016 Plastic Surgery Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

It is not surprising that many people are seeking facial rejuvenation as most of us are living longer, healthier lives and more of our lives are being captured on camera at any given time (and posted on social media for all to see). Here are several popular facial rejuvenation options that are on the rise (and that are done at our Santa Barbara Cosmetic Surgery Center practice).

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

In 2016 over 209,000 people had eyelid surgery. Eyes are often the first thing people notice and they can convey so much. When sagging skin or fat bulges appear, they can dramatically affect a person’s overall appearance, making them look tired, unhappy, or unapproachable when they are not. Eyelid surgery – which can be done on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid (or both) – will restore the appearance around the eyes to give you a well-rested (but not “done”) look.

Forehead Lift Surgery

Forehead lift surgery went up by 6% in 2016. The Forehead Lift – also known as a “Brow Lift” – repositions the forehead and brow upward. Relaxation fo the forehead can cause a heaviness on the eyebrows that crowds the eyes. When this happens, many people think their eyes need to be done and are surprised to hear that it is the forehead area that needs to be addressed. Putting the forehead area back into a more youthful position will alter a person’s appearance – in a very positive way.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)
People do not normally get nose reshaping surgery to turn back the clock but it is a procedure that provides rejuvenation in the sense that it can create a more balanced relationship in a person’s facial features. Rhinoplasty can refine a bulbous tip, narrow a wide nose, straighten a crooked nose and/or remove an unwanted bump. At Cosmetic Surgery Center we believe that the end result of a rhinoplasty should not have an “operated” look and, in fact, the best work is usually not detected.

Botox and Dysport

Over 7 million people had Botox or Dysport treatments last year. The number of treatments for Botox and Dysport has risen 797% since 2000! The popularity of the treatment is due to the low cost, no downtime, and the end result. A half hour (to one hour) appointment can smooth forehead lines and crow’s feet, which can take years off a person’s appearance. This anti-wrinkle treatment is quick, virtually painless, and works.

Dermal Fillers (such as Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm, Radiesse)

Injectable fillers are used to restore or enhance an appearance and can last from 6 months to 5 years depending on the type of filler used. The most common fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma), a naturally-occurring complex carbohydrate that binds water molecules to add volume and keep tissues soft. Fillers can be used to “fill” wrinkles, fine lines, some scars and also can be used to add volume to areas that are “deflated”. Most dermal filler appointments only take 1 to 2 hours and the results are instantaneous. Over 2.6 million Americans had a filler treatment in 2016.

Facial rejuvenation is a wonderful way to restore your youthful look!

Cosmetic Surgery on the Rise Worldwide

At the annual IMCAS Aesthetic Surgery & Cosmetic Dermatology World Congress it was reported that the cosmetic surgery market worldwide grew by 8.3% in 2016 with about $8.9 billion spent on cosmetic surgery procedures and non-invasive aesthetic treatments. The prediction for 2017 and beyond is that the number will keep growing.

The trend towards people wanting to “look their best” is due to many factors, but what we commonly hear in our Santa Barbara cosmetic surgery office is:

  • I want to look the age that I feel.
  • My face reflects a look that says sad/tired/upset/unhappy when I’m not.
  • I need to look younger because the job market is competitive.

Cosmetic surgery is also on the rise because techniques have far advanced since surgeries of a few decades ago which means less downtime and better results. Also, there are many minimally-invasive plastic surgery options available that are less expensive with a shorter recovery time that give a nice, natural result. In addition to better surgery procedures, many patients are surprised that all of our cosmetic surgeries can be performed without going under general anesthesia. We use a combination of local anesthesia and oral sedation alone, or in combination with intravenous sedation that provides relaxation and amnesia.

If you are interested in turning back the clock and desire a natural, rested, “non-operated” look, call our office (805-563-0000) to schedule a consultation today. We specialize in facial rejuvenation and liposuction body contouring.
